A World Land Speed Record

180 Mph on the Horizon
With a new team, a new bike design and builder, and a new location, Gordon McCall reframes his focus on the World Land Speed Record and continues his quest to become the fastest man on a bicycle.
Experiencing the same challenges as any other.racing entity, Team McCall USA has had its share of obstacles to overcome. But with each setback came an improved idea, and ultimately, a gain.
With rock-solid support from three-time Moto GP World Champion Wayne Rainey and Texas-based automotive performance specialist John Hennessey, Team McCall USA has persevered against several deterrents beyond the team’s control.Bike design changes, team member changes and bad weather at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, beginning in the summer of 2007 and continuing through the scheduled October attempt date, forced the team from its target location due to poor surface conditions.
Then in early 2008, legendary motorcycle racer and builder Mert Lawwill stepped in as new team member and l.ead bike designer, bringing with him decades of experience and a new perspective on the project. Having recently constructed a world record-setting downhill bicycle, Mert’s design secured a 117-mph record on ice and proved his combination of abilities and knowledge to be successful.
Seeking a more controlled environment and hard-.packed surface, Team McCall USA is now collaborating with the United States Air Force to establish the new record at Edwards Air Force Base in the high desert of Los Angeles County, California.
