Gordon McCall's SPEED FEVER: Team McCall USA Aims at 180 mile per hour world record attempt on a bicycle!

10/1/2007

Monterey, CA (October 2007) - Gordon McCall sets his sights on the famous world land speed record on a bicycle.

Currently held by Fred Rompelberg, a citizen of the Netherlands, the record speed of 166.944 mph was set in 1995. Gordon’s effort will attempt to break the record and document the time for the one-mile effort with the Guinness Book of World Records, bringing the record back to the USA.

Assembling a team of “Who’s Who” notables from the motorsports world, Gordon’s friends have rallied together to support his success in his land speed effort. Wayne Rainey, 3-time Moto GP world champion phones and mentors Gordon daily while he campaigns with his motorcycle connections to provide the top end components for the bicycle. Dunlop, Shoei, Marchessini, Brembo and Ohlins have all followed Wayne’s lead and joined the team providing state-of-the-art parts and safety items to support McCall’s attempt. 5-time Tour de France rider and winner of the 2006 Race Across America Jonathan Boyer keeps Gordon’s training and endurance on track with grueling weekly rides in the hills of Carmel Valley and e-mail memos focusing Gordon on nutrition and tracking his power and recovery. After some tough design issues were resolved, team member Dan Kyle brought Peter Verdone of PVD Designs on board, bringing his engineering and designing skills to the team, building the specialized bicycle frame that will withstand the intense effort. 5-time Olympic speed skating gold medal winner Dr. Eric Heiden and Tour de France team physician, Dr. Max Testa evaluate and set training standards for Gordon through their advanced sports medicine clinic and years of combined experience with extreme athletics. The legendary automotive racer and inventor of the down force wing in automotive racing, Jim Hall, adds his aerodynamic and safety experience to the project, and John Hennessey of Hennessey Performance the well-known “Speed” specialist, will provide the specialized 200+ mile per hour Dodge Viper that will pace the land speed attempt.

“I have been thinking about this record for 20 years.” Says McCall, a competitive cyclist and motorsports enthusiast who travels the country now wearing many hats. As a specialist for Bonhams Global Motor Car Department, Co-Founder of the elegant motorsports gathering “The Quail”, and producer of The McCall Motorworks Event, the well known private party held each year at the Monterey Jet Center to kick off the big automotive week in Monterey, CA, McCall stays busy and keeps his “finger on the pulse” year round.

“Juggling career and cycling training has been a challenge in itself”, McCall explains, “ I love what I do and my livelihood requires that I stay on top of every aspect of the car market both vintage and contemporary.” While traveling extensively for Bonhams, Gordon’s training regimen began in March 2006 at the UC Davis sports medicine facility where Dr. Heiden and Dr. Testa performed the first physical evaluation for McCall and set the fitness and training schedule for land speed attempt. With an above average lung capacity, a formidable level of fitness, McCall’s 6’5” stature and conditioned muscle mass, both Heiden and Testa scientifically concluded that McCall was the prime candidate to achieve the 180 mph goal. Since then, Gordon continues with the program and will return in March 2007 to their new sports medicine facility at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Murray Utah. There he will begin the second phase of the training, which will take him all the way up to the attempt in late 2007. Gordon’s challenge will then be to maintain his condition and increase his power, both essential components in this all out team effort.
